Blaža Klemenčič and Tanja Žakelj were the obvious favorites for this race and any of them could easily take the title. Blaža took an early lead in the start of the race and rode with really high pace, and her gap grew. But everything turned around in the second part of this race on the hot Sunday that took place on the one of most difficult cross-country tracks in Slovenia. Tanja was getting faster and faster – similar to what she did on the last World Cup – while Blaža also crashed and had to back down. Tanja crossed the finish line with a big margin, Blaža was second, Tina Perše third.
This is Tanja’s fifth national title of her career. Luka Mezgec won the men’s race.
Tanja Žakelj: “I’m happy to get the national title jersey, but I’m even happier that I’m racing better and have motivation for the next part of the season. I expected that Blaža will take the lead, and she made a gap of 30, 40 seconds in the first laps, but I didn’t surrender. I knew that she is also having a hard time and I kept the rhythm high, but tried to be as rational as possible with my strengths. This worked out for me on the end when I was again very fast.”
Slovenian downhill championships will take place next weekend in bike park Javornik.
